Description:
On March 12, 2004, at the age of eighty, the beloved poet Natan Yonatan passed away. One of the most exclusive and most significant voices of modern Hebrew poetry died out. Before his death, Natan Yonatan started working on his book Within The Song To Live, a bi-lingual, Hebrew- English edition, which Gefen Publishing House is proud to publish. The book is a representative selection of poems chosen by the poet in order to introduce his poetry to English speaking readers.

The poetry is read, sung and quoted in Israel at times of celebrations and memorials and it enjoys an incomparable popularity.

The poet opted for a bilingual edition of his work for the sake of speakers and lovers of Hebrew who live in English speaking countries. He entrusted the work of translating his poetry to Ms. Janice Rebibo, who began this task as far back as 1997.

The book includes a CD with a selection of Natan Yonatan's composed poems that have been turned into popular folk songs. The songs are performed by The Brothers and The Sisters, one of Israel's top folk groups. The CD includes eleven songs, three of which are performed both in English and in Hebrew.

Critic Reviews:
Yonatan – a poet of 70 years, born in Kiev – is described as 'one of the clearest voices of modern Hebrew poetry.' He studied in Israeli and British universities. His poems are riddled with 'secrets, profound philosophy, brilliant intellect, daring eroticism, and a rare humanistic maturity.' His poetry gained acclaim throughout the world (not just Israel), 'penetrating the books of prayer in synagogues of Jewish communities worldwide.' Hence Yonatan reached a wide audience, including a variety of poets from around the world.

Contained in this compilation are 70 poems in Hebrew, translated into English. They are categorized into three sections: Earth and Water; Love; Grace. Some are incredibly short (five words) other a full page. One tells of a son's plea to his father for acceptance, comfort and love. The love poems are intense, indicative of perhaps unrequited love. And the poet's real character shines through in 'A Conversation with Mother,' when Yonatan writes: 'Since we can't change life, let's fix the play.'
Objective:
To present the works of recently-deceased famous Hebrew poet Natan Yonatan, especially for the English-speaking world which hasn't yet been able to access his works as easily as this bi-lingual edition.
Comments:
Some of the poems are also read out on the CD-rom which very much brings them to life.
Use:
Fantastic for all those intrigued by the Hebrew language – especially if they want to learn more since Yonatan's poetry 'makes use of all the various layers [of it].'
